Dentures: Types, Process, and Insurance Considerations

Dentures are an important dental prosthetic for patients missing multiple teeth. This lesson covers the types of dentures, the standard denture process, and important insurance considerations.

Insurance Considerations

Most insurance plans require prior authorization for dentures. This process typically takes 3-5 weeks. Front desk staff must confirm insurance approval when scheduling appointments and before seating patients. Approval status can be found in the patient’s smart doc.

Types of Dentures

  1. Complete Upper Denture (CUD)
  2. Complete Lower Denture (CLD)
  3. Lower Partial Denture (LRPD)
  4. Upper Partial Denture (URPD)

Standard Denture Process (8-12 weeks)

  1. 1

    Initial Impressions / Bite Registration

This first appointment lasts about 1 hour. All necessary extractions must be completed prior to this visit. The dentist takes a series of impressions and measurements of the patient’s jaw.

  2. 2

    Wax Try-In

This 15-20 minute appointment involves setting the teeth in wax. Once the patient approves the fit and appearance, the case is sent to the lab for processing.

  3. 3

    Delivery

The patient receives the final denture product during this 10-15 minute appointment. The dentures are placed in the patient’s mouth for final approval.

  4. 4

    Adjustment

This final 15-20 minute appointment occurs after the patient has worn the dentures for 2-3 days. Any sore spots are identified and addressed.
