Tooth Extraction and Protection
Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are performed for various reasons, including crowded mouth, decay, infection, or risk of infection. The procedure typically lasts approximately one hour and involves the following steps:
1. Administration of local anesthetic to numb the area.
2. If the tooth is impacted, the dentist may need to cut away gum or bone tissue.
3. Extraction of the tooth, which may be removed in pieces if necessary.
4. Provision of post-operative instructions to the patient.
Below are the standard post-operative instructions provided to patients:
Occlusal Guards
Occlusal guards are recommended for patients who exhibit teeth clenching or grinding, particularly during sleep or periods of stress. There are two types of occlusal guards:
1. Soft Occlusal Guards:
– Two-step process: impressions and delivery
– Typically delivered within 1-2 days after impressions
2. Hard Occlusal Guards:
– Two-step process: impressions and delivery
– Usually requires 2-3 weeks for delivery due to lab processing
The selection between soft and hard occlusal guards is based on a thorough assessment of the patient’s specific needs and circumstances.
