WHAT IS A DENTAL INFECTION (ABSCESS)?
A dental infection is caused when bacteria in the mouth make their way into the nerve of the tooth, which is surrounded by pulp. When bacteria enters your tooth, it slowly begins to destroy your pulp and nerve material, which causes severe oral pain, and will eventually result in the loss of the affected tooth.
If the infection escapes from the tooth, this is known as a dental abscess. Bacteria can build up around the tooth and surrounding tissue, causing your gums and face to swell, and putting you at risk of further infections. Dental infections can also cause bacteria to enter your bloodstream, which is linked to a higher risk of issues like stroke, heart attack or diabetes.
Gingival
This infection develops in the gums. It does not usually affect the tooth or supporting structures.
Periapical
A periapical abscess is an infection that forms at the tip of the root. This occurs because bacteria can spread to the inside of the tooth to the pulp through a fracture or cavity.
Periodontal
This infection starts in bone and tissues that support the tooth. A periodontal abscess usually results from periodontitis or gum disease and is more common among adults.
